For saving a surf board, we were reward with a Conch, now to get it out of the shell for dinner. |
Well with time on your hands and you need some exercise, more exploring is at hand. Get your walking shoes on, a bottle of water, sunscreen and off you go!
We came upon Green Turtle Cemetery. Some of the crypts dated back to the 1800's. From reading some of the stones, you can get a story of that person resting there. Some were teachers, doctors, etc. A lot of Green Turtle Bahamians lived a long time.......we saw a lot of markers that stated that they were in there 90's and an odd one to be a century. Oh the stories that they could tell of what live on the cae was then.
We visited the Museum and learned why Green Turtle is called Green Turtle. There used to be a lot of green turtles in this part of the Bahamas and this was a main stay in there diet. Today the taking of turtles albeit green, leather back, loggerheads is illegal and they are now protected. We have seen a few of these big guys in and around our boat but they are hard to photograph....maybe next time.
Here is an original home, it has not been kept up but it is still standing even after all these years and hurricanes including the one just this August Irene.
Green Turtle also has many artists that live here year round. There are some famous Bahamians that specialize in Bronze. We found their Sculpture Garden. It is dedicated to the first Loyalists that came to the Islands.
As there is another way of looking at the sea conditions is to go look at the sea. Green Turtle has very nice beaches too. The sand is just like powdered sugar.
